Not the Path I Planned

There are times when what we plan, what we think we need, what we think we want, what we expect our life plan to be, is nothing like what the outcome becomes. Life is messy, full of changes and challenges which can at any time cause us to divert from the plan, from the path we thought we should be traversing. Work life changes, love life changes, physicality changes, our surroundings change. It can be frustrating and overwhelming, but it is important to keep forging ahead, keep moving forward with positivity because maybe the path we thought we should be on, is not the one we really needed. The divergences, new avenues, and twists were perhaps kismet.

This series is a synthesis of life stories; my own, my friends, my family, and more. No one piece represents a specific story but instead represents how our journey in life is molded in different ways through our experience. Sometimes the path is clear and direct while other times it is hard to distinguish and can be mangled, and at times the path isn’t visible because a pause is needed. Shot on infrared film to show the unseen spectrum of the world, the CMYK theme with the watercolor painting of the squares is a nod to the different emotions and states of mind we experience- Cyan is calm and depression, magenta is passion and anger, yellow is happiness and anxiety. The black and white square represent the path in the story not yet taken, a choice to be avoided or to take later, the future possibilities not yet written.

This series is made from medium format infrared film photographs taken in South Florida, scanned and archival pigment printed on matte paper. The prints are then cut up into smaller squares, hand toned with watercolor paint, and then adhered to a painted canvas.
